Reality television programs, which feature real people engaged in real activities rather than
professional actors performing scripted scenes, are as controversial as they are popular. Why?
Are there benefits or dangers related to regularly watching reality TV shows?

Chose ONE reality television show, and write a thoughtful essay that effectively argues why
people should or should not watch this show. What’s the harm? What’s the benefits? What do
experts and others say about this show’s value? (Or lack thereof.) What do you say?

Create a debatable thesis that takes a strong, specific stance and then defend your position.
Back up your argument by using concrete evidence in body paragraphs. Remember that an
effective argument uses facts, rather than emotions, to sway the audience. Also, be careful with
word choice and tone. You do not want to alienate or offend readers who disagree with your
views.

Within the body of the essay, devote at least one paragraph to those with opposing views.
Then, refute them.

If you quote a source or use information that is not common knowledge, be sure to cite the
source within the essay.

Present your views in a three-page, double-spaced essay, using a 12-point font. All versions
must follow this format. Write in the third person and meet the length requirement. Please
proofread carefully

 Have I established my purpose and audience?
 Does my thesis outline a debatable argument?
 Do my thesis and topic sentences clearly state my position on the issue?
 Is my topic manageable? Have I focused it enough?
 Does each body paragraph include strong supporting evidence?
 Do I use facts, rather than emotions, to argue my point?
 Do I include examples, statistics, logical consequences or answers to the opposition?
