DATA ANALYSIS PROJECT

DATA ANALYSIS PROJECT

In this assessment, you are required to write a research report which presents some findings from a survey of adults in England and Wales in which they were asked about their perceptions and experiences of crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system. The objective of the assessment is to demonstrate the ability to:

a. manipulate variables
b. prepare simple statistical analyses
c. present the results of the analyses in an appropriate format
d. explicate and comment on the results that are presented.

You will be provided with a unique number of respondents from the survey, representing a subset of the 5,662 respondents, who were randomly selected using SPSS. the unique numbers are in the document named under (%4000306613 Alaa EL Mehrek (2200) (1).sav).
plz download SPSS in order to see it. i have also attached a guidelines document to tell you what to do and also some documents to help.

Total: 2,700 its ok to go slightly over

Tables and Figures:
Sections 2-5: about 1,000 words
Section 6 (additional analyses): about 300 words
Total: 1,300 words
Word count available for accompanying text (intro., commentary on results, conclusion): about 1,400 words
THE ASSESSMENT BRIEF

For this report, you will be presenting and commenting on the results of the data analysis that you will perform using some of the simplest operations from SPSS. Your report should include the following sections and content:

1. TITLE: INTRODUCTION
Here, you will give a very brief overview of the topics to be explored in the report and the content that will be included.

2. TITLE: FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR SELECTED VARIABLES.
Here, you will report and comment on the frequencies of selected variables from the original file.
a. You should include TWO scale variables, TWO ordinal variables, and TWO nominal variables.
b. For each variable use the appropriate technique for summarizing frequencies and comment briefly on the results.

3. TITLE: NEW VARIABLES
Here you will report on the creation of new variables from the variables that are in the original file
a. A new variable for AGE. You will dichotomise the original variable, i.e., convert the original variable into two categories only (younger respondents; older respondents). The criterion for doing this will be to split your sample at the median age. Include the frequency distribution for the new variable.
b. A new variable for ETHNIC ORIGIN: you will group respondents into two or more categories, outlining your rationale for doing so. Include the frequency distribution for the BOTH the original variable AND the new variable.

4. TITLE: PREPARATION OF CONTINGENCY TABLES
Here you will create three contingency tables and present and analyse the results.
a. Each contingency table will include two variables (which could be nominal or ordinal).
b. For each contingency table:
i. Include the absolute frequency of cases
ii. The row OR column percentages
iii. Calculate the chi-square statistic AND a nominal or ordinal measure of association
iv. Present the results in your report in table format and comment on the findings:
1. Is there a significant association between the two variables?
2. If so, how strong is that association and what is the nature of the association (i.e., how are the variables related)?

5. TITLE: CORRELATIONS
For this section, you will compare scale variables using Pearson’s bivariate correlation.
a. You will do three comparisons, each one using two scale variables.
b. For each comparison you will present the following:
i. The correlation coefficient
ii. The sign of the correlation coefficient (+ or -)
iii. The significance of the correlation coefficient.
iv. Where the correlation is significant: you will describe the nature of the association between the two variables.

6. TITLE: ADDITIONAL ANALYSES (YOUR CHANCE TO BE CREATIVE)

Here, you will include any additional statistical analyses (contingency tables or correlations) that identify other relationships between the variables that look to be important AND/OR show that there are no relationships between variables that we might have expected to be associated with each other.
a. Depending on the amount of word count that you have available, you should think about including anywhere between two and four additional analyses.
b. For each analysis, include the statistical results from SPSS and write come commentary about them.

7. TITLE: CONCLUSION
Here, you will write a very brief conclusion summarising the findings of your analyses of the perceptions and experiences of crime, victimisation and criminal justice.

8. REFERENCES
You do not need to do a literature review as part of this assignment. However, it is possible that you want to reference some relevant sources as you write the text (e.g., reference to a description of the method used in the British Crime Survey; or reference to prior findings about topics that you are analysing, such as fear of crime or perceptions of criminal justice).

A FINAL NOTE ON THE PRESENTATION OF TABLES
It is important that any tables included in the report are:
1. Numbered
2. Include an appropriate title briefly indicating the variable(s) being presented
3. Nicely formatted in terms of visual representation
4. Labelled in accordance with the principles of good writing (i.e., no spelling mistakes; appropriate use of capital letters).
