DIRECTIONS FOR THE ESSAY TEST

The purpose of the Essay Test is to find out how well you can write an essay.

Listed below, along with some information, are a few suggestions which will help you do your best on the essay.

1.             You will be given a choice of topics. Read each topic carefully and choose the one on which you feel you can do your best writing.

2.             Start planning your paper as soon as you have decided on your essay topic.

3.             Organization of your essay is important. In general, the passing essay will have a central idea that is directly related to the assigned topic; have a clear organizational plan; develop points with evidence and details in a coherent, logical, and non-repetitious way; and avoid frequent or serious errors in grammar, mechanics, word choice, and sentence structure.

4.             Use the MLA guidelines; strive for 500 words.

Topics:

1.    What are the characteristics of a good college student? Explain.

2.    Should college students have complete freedom to choose their own courses? Discuss.

3.    If you were to be deprived of one of your five senses (sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing) which one would you most hate to give up? Explain.

4.    Would you prefer to rear a family in the city or the country? Explain why.

5.    In general, do movies and/or television programs provide a realistic picture of life in America? Explain.

6.    How should public high schools deal with students considered to be constant troublemakers? Discuss.

7.    Some states now permit single men and women to adopt children. Do you favor such a policy? Explain why or why not.

8.    Should college students be required to attend classes? Discuss.

9.    For what qualities or achievements would you feel justified in calling an individual successful? Explain.
