Journal Reflection: Self-Concept

You have read guidelines to help improve your self-concept in the text. Now it is time to apply these to your own life! To do that, you need to set a goal for yourself and then apply the guidelines from the text to help you reach your goal.

For this Journal you are being asked to reflect on improving your self-concept by journaling your responses to the following six questions. Responses are intended to be in a Q&A format and the total assignment should be 500–600 words while incorporating relevant course concepts and terms from the text and citing in APA format.

1. Define one change you would like to make to your self-perception (how you think about yourself). It might be a behavior or a self-fulfilling prophecy or anything about yourself you would like to alter.
2. Write down the change you want to make on a card or paper so that you can see it every day. Use strong, affirmative language to motivate yourself: “I will listen more carefully to friends,” or “I will start speaking up in classes,” for example and be prepared to include this statement in your Journal submission.
3. Refine your general goal by making sure it is realistic and fair. Write out your refined goal using specific language from the text: “I want to show my two best friends that I am paying attention when they talk to me,” or “I want to make one comment in each meeting of one class this week,” for example and format in APA.
4. Place the card or paper where you will see it often. Each time you see it, repeat the message out loud to yourself. This should help sustain your commitment to making the change.
5. Observe others who are models for what you want to be. Write down what they do. Use specific language to describe how they communicate: “Tracy nods a lot and repeats back what others say so they know she is listening,” or “James provides examples of concepts in class so that the ideas are more concrete,” for example.
6. Select contexts that assist you in reaching your goal: “I will talk with my friends in private settings where there are no distractions that interfere with listening well,” or “I will begin speaking up in my Communication course because it is the most discussion-oriented and because other students make a lot of comments there. Later, I will speak up in my sociology course, which combines lecture and discussion.”

 

 

 

Unit 3 Assignment

Explain how self-concept and perception impact interpersonal communication.

Watch the video, College Success, and answer the following questions in a separate Word document. Submit your Assignment to the Unit 3: Assignment Dropbox by the end of the unit. You can find a transcript for this video on page 85 of your textbook.

1. How would you describe Jim’s self-concept?
2. How is self-concept affecting the interaction? Is it helping it? Hindering it? Explain using concepts from the text.
3. Using the process of human perception starting on page 64, explain the situation from your perspective as a student.
4. Using the guidelines for improving perception and communication starting on page 79 of the text, provide at least two tips for both Jim and his father on how to handle the situation in an effective way. Make sure to incorporate the text guidelines with proper in-text citations to support your points.
5. Please explain, using concepts from the course and text material, the most significant thing learned from this Assignment.

Analyze what constitutes effective interpersonal communication in diverse contexts.

1. From the interaction does it seem to you that Alan is actively listening? Why or why not?

1. Using the chapters on language and emotions to help frame your answer, suggest two ways that Ken could open this conversation more productively, beyond clearly expressing his emotions and using “I” language.
2. How do you perceive Jan’s effort to convince Ken to forgive her? Based on what you have learned in this chapter, suggest two ways she might more effectively seek Ken’s forgiveness.
3. What are two nonverbal cues used by Jan. What are two nonverbal cues used by Ken? In what ways did the nonverbal cues used by both Ken and Jan impact the message? What are the verbal messages used by each? What, contradictions occurred between the nonverbal cues and the verbal message and how did the contradictions impact the interaction?
4. Reviewing the nonverbal and verbal cues identified in the last question, what are the roles that these play in the conflict? Do these cues lead to a more positive outcome or negative? How can nonverbal and verbal cues be used to lead to a more productive conflict resolution?
5. The conversation seems to be framed in a win-lose orientation to conflict. Each person wants to be right, and to win at the expense of the other. How can Jan and Ken move their conflict discussion into a win-win orientation?
6. Review the eight conflict-management skills discussed in the text. Identify three examples of these skills in the dialogue between Jan and Ken.
7. Identify three places in the dialogue where Jan and Ken missed opportunities to manage conflict successfully. Give specific suggestions (supported by the text material) on how the conflict management strategies could have been incorporated to improve the interaction.
