Today, more special education students are taught in regular education classrooms in order to satisfy the mandate set forth in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that all students will be educated in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Because inclusion, which is the practice of educating special education students in the regular education classroom, is increasing, you will need to be prepared to accommodate all students. It is important that you educate yourself and can successfully differentiate your instruction, however, remember that you should also have a great resource in the special education staff on your campus. Below are two scenarios that you may face as a regular education teacher in an exclusionary setting. Carefully read each scenario below, then answer the question that follows. Scenario #1

Max has Asperger’s Syndrome which makes it difficult for him to interact well with others. He has strong receptive language skills, but he has difficulty expressing himself in writing and in speaking. Max is fascinated with numbers and sometimes it is difficult to get him to do anything but math in your English Language Arts class. He also has great difficulty attending to activities and with organizational skills, making it very important that his regular education teacher provide a highly structured classroom environment.

Scenario #2

The students in your class have been exhibiting exclusionary behavior. There are two main cliques, and there are several children, including two with disabilities, who are generally treated as outcasts. When considering how to respond, the classroom teacher should be aware that it is crucial to establish an environment specifically designed to build a learning community in which all students feel safe and accepted.
