choose ONE of the option below
Option 1: Essay
Students must write an essay on either of the following two questions:
1. In what ways do existing theories of leadership explain how effective leadership contributes to effective organisational change? Draw on examples in order to illustrate your arguments.

2. How have leadership experts defined leadership? Do you see anything missing in any of their formulations? What is your definition of leadership? Why do you think that is a good definition?
Your answer to the essay question should:
a) draw on appropriate theories and concepts discussed during the course;
b) critically analyse these theories and concepts and discuss the extent to which
they appear to translate into the actual practice of leadership and;
c) where appropriate, draw on examples of leadership in organisations in order
to illustrate your arguments.

Option 2: Biographical Study
A biographical study in this context involves undertaking a critical evaluation of the leadership of an individual leader, contemporary or historical, of a business organisation.
Biographical research seeks to understand the changing experiences and outlooks
of individuals in their daily lives, what they see as important, and how to articulate interpretations of the accounts given of their past, present and future. The biographical approach is a particularly rewarding way to study leadership in organisations.

Students may select a past or present recognised leader of a business organisation

(for example, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Frank Lowy, Kerry Packer, James Packer, Rupert Murdoch, Richard Branson, Janet Holmes á Court) who has been the subject of one or more published biographies or who has received significant coverage in the academic or business press. You should be alert to the fact that autobiographies/ biographies are often celebrations of leader’s lives or careers rather than critical assessments of them. Therefore, your
research should also involve supplementing any major auto/ biographical study of the
subject with additional relevant material.
As a first step, you should undertake a subject search of your chosen leader in the Library catalogue for the existence of any published biographies followed by a search of relevant Library databases such as Expanded Academic Index or ABI Inform (for academic journal articles) and Business Source Premier or Factiva (for the business press). If you wish, you may select one of the above examples or an alternative subject of your own choosing.
In undertaking this biographical study, students should gain insights into the
impact of the particular leader under scrutiny on their organisation. What we are looking for here is a critical analysis of the leader which relates to issues and topics covered in the course and tested against some of the theoretical constructs you have encountered. For example, did the leader exhibit a similar style or type of leadership in all circumstances? Overall, would the subject fit into a transactional, transformational (charismatic) leadership or emotional intelligence category? Did gender or cross-cultural management issues influence leadership strategy and how effectively were these negotiated? How effective was the subject in nurturing the existing organisational culture or changing it. Did the leader practice ethical and socially responsible behaviour? You might also consider the ways in which the leader influenced his/her followers and the extent to which the followers might have influenced the leader’s strategy.
