Interview Question Tips

1. Questions should be open-ended rather than close-ended. For example, instead of asking “Have you ever experienced discrimination?” ask “Please, describe ways that discrimination has affected your organization.”

1. Ask factual questions before opinion questions. For example, ask “What can you tell me about gender roles?” before “What do you think of the gender roles in your work place?”

1. Use probes to gather more information if you find that you are not getting enough details. For example:

• Would you give me an example?
• Can you elaborate for me?
• Would you explain further?
• Is there anything else?

1. Begin with a question that puts the person you are interviewing in their comfort zone (e.g., “Can you tell me about your job, family, background, etc.,)

1. End with an open ended question that makes the person you are interviewing feel “good’ about the experience (e.g., “Is there anything you would like to add?”)
