LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: CASE FOR ANALYSIS

Alvis Corporation

Kevin McCarthy is a manager of a production department in Alvis Corporation, a firm that manufactures office equipment. After reading an article that stressed
the benefits of participative management, Kevin believes that these benefits could be realised in his department if the workers are allowed to participate in
making some decisions that affect them. The workers are not unionized. Kevin selected two decisions for his experiment in participative management.

The first decision involved vacation schedules. Each summer the workers were given two weeks- vacation, but no more than two workers can go on vacation at the
same time. In prior years, Kevin made this decision himself. He would first ask the workers to indicate their preference dates, and then he considered how the
work would be affected if different people were out at the same time. It was important to plan a vacation schedule that would ensure adequate staffing for all
the essential operations performed by the department. When more than two workers wanted the same time period, and they had similar skills, he usually gave
preference to the worker

with highest productivity.

The second decision involved production standards. Sales had been increasing steadily over the past few years, and the company recently installed some new
equipment to increase productivity. The new equipment would allow Kevin%u2019s department to produce more with the same number of workers. The company had a
pay incentive system in which workers received a piece rate for each unit produced above the standard amount. Separate standards existed for each type of
product, based on industrial engineering study conducted a few years earlier. Top management wanted to readjust the production standards to reflect the fact
that the new equipment made it possible for the workers to earn without working any harder. The savings from higher productivity were needed to help pay for
the new equipment.

Kevin called a meeting of his 15 workers an hour before the end of the workday. He explained that he wanted them to discuss the two issues and make
recommendations. Kevin figured that the workers might be inhibited about participating in the discussion if he were present, so he left them alone to discuss
the issues. Besides, Kevin had an appointment to meet

with quality control manager. Quality problems had increased after the new equipment was installed, and the industrial engineers were studying
the problem in an attempt to determine why quality had gotten worse rather than better.

When Kevin returned to his department just at quitting time, he was surprised to learn that the workers recommended keeping the standards same. He had assumed
they know the pay incentives were no longer fair and would set a higher standard. The spokesman for the group explained that their base pay had not kept up
with inflation and the higher incentive pay resorted their real income to its prior level.

On the vacation issue, the group was deadlocked. Several of the workers wanted to take their vacations during the same two-week period and could not agree on
who should go. Some workers argued that they should have priority because they had more seniority while others argued that priority should be based on
productivity, as in the past. Since it was quitting time, the group concluded that Kevin would have to resolve the dispute himself. After all, wasn%u2019t that
what he was being paid for?

1. Analyze this situation using the Hershey-Blanchard model ant the
Vroom-Jago model. What do these models suggest as the appropriate leadership or decision style? Explain your answer.

2. Evaluate Kevin McCarthy%u2019s leadership style before and during his experiment in
participative management.

3. If you were Kevin McCarthy, What would you do now

As an individual, develop an inspiring anecdote about something that actually happened, or might have happened, at a current or former
employer.

Make up a list of core values that the firm holds dear: such as quality, service, or innovation. Think of an incident in which an employee
strikingly lived up to (or violated) one of these values. Write it up as a story with a moral.

For years, David and Evie Wexler of The Little Guys Home Electronics had many ideas about how to improve the home electronics store in which
they were working, but could not put them into action. So they decided to start a small business. Twelve years later, many of their ideas have been met with
widespread success. Like many entrepreneurs, the Wexlers felt blocked by their old positions and wanted to strike out on their own. They possessed many of the
characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. They took their high energy level and need to succeed and formed The Little Guys as a partnership with a long-time
associate, Paul Gerrity. The three owners maintained control and responsibility of the entire company, believing that combining their diverse skills would
produce the greatest success. Today, with annual sales of over $10 million, The Little Guys has moved beyond the start-up phase to become a success. While the
founders have benefited from the growth of their business, they are not resting on their laurels. Instead, they look forward with anticipation to the next big
challenge.

After viewing The Little Guys video case study, please answer the following three questions in three to six paragraphs (250-500 total

leadership

at least 5 reference and using harvard reference style. must including the text book reference, the whole essay need to link the text book :)
textbook:
Northouse, P.G. 2013: Leadership: Theory and Practice, 6th edition. Thousand Oaks: Sage.
choose ONE of the option below
Option 1: Essay
Students must write an essay on either of the following two questions:
1. In what ways do existing theories of leadership explain how effective leadership contributes to effective organisational change? Draw on examples in order to illustrate your arguments.
2. How have leadership experts defined leadership? Do you see anything missing in any of their formulations? What is your definition of leadership? Why do you think that is a good definition?

Your answer to the essay question should:
a) draw on appropriate theories and concepts discussed during the course;
b) critically analyse these theories and concepts and discuss the extent to which
they appear to translate into the actual practice of leadership and;
c) where appropriate, draw on examples of leadership in organisations in order
to illustrate your arguments.

Option 2: Biographical Study
A biographical study in this context involves undertaking a critical evaluation of the leadership of an individual leader, contemporary or historical, of a business organisation.
Biographical research seeks to understand the changing experiences and outlooks
of individuals in their daily lives, what they see as important, and how to articulate interpretations of the accounts given of their past, present and future. The biographical approach is a particularly rewarding way to study leadership in organisations.

Students may select a past or present recognised leader of a business organisation
(for example, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Frank Lowy, Kerry Packer, James Packer, Rupert Murdoch, Richard Branson, Janet Holmes á Court) who has been the subject of one or more published biographies or who has received significant coverage in the academic or business press. You should be alert to the fact that autobiographies/ biographies are often celebrations of leader’s lives or careers rather than critical assessments of them. Therefore, your
research should also involve supplementing any major auto/ biographical study of the
subject with additional relevant material.

As a first step, you should undertake a subject search of your chosen leader in the Library catalogue for the existence of any published biographies followed by a search of relevant Library databases such as Expanded Academic Index or ABI Inform (for academic journal articles) and Business Source Premier or Factiva (for the business press). If you wish, you may select one of the above examples or an alternative subject of your own choosing.
In undertaking this biographical study, students should gain insights into the
impact of the particular leader under scrutiny on their organisation. What we are looking for here is a critical analysis of the leader which relates to issues and topics covered in the course and tested against some of the theoretical constructs you have encountered. For example, did the leader exhibit a similar style or type of leadership in all circumstances? Overall, would the subject fit into a transactional, transformational (charismatic) leadership or emotional intelligence category? Did gender or cross-cultural management issues influence leadership strategy and how effectively were these negotiated? How effective was the subject in nurturing the existing organisational culture or changing it. Did the leader practice ethical and socially responsible behaviour? You might also consider the ways in which the leader influenced his/her followers and the extent to which the followers might have influenced the leader’s strategy.
