Robinson’s Foods

Robinson Foods is a grocery store chain operating out of northern parts of the provinces of Western Canada. These are small town grocery stores that depend upon the truck transportation of their products, and the customer service that calls for community minded managers. The stores are successful in small population communities and attempt to keep their customers from traveling to larger centres where the big boxes of WalMart, Costco, and All Canadian Superstores are difficult to compete against. As one manager put it “I can order two hundred 10 kg bags of lawn fertilizer for my small store. Even if every other Robinson makes the same order, we can’t compete with the WalMart giants who order 100,000 10 kg bags of the same fertilizer and are able to get a reduced price based upon volume”. The strength of a small town hardware store was based upon customer service, familiarity with and in the community, and the quality of their product.

Sarah completed a diploma in Business Administration and while she wasn’t really thinking of a career with Robinson Foods, she went back to work there full time after having done some summer and part time work while going to school. She felt she was familiar with the store and its products and that was one of the reasons that the manager hired her. It was only a year later that the manager had to retire due to health reasons, and Sarah was moved into the position of Manager. Sarah was methodical, business like, and appreciated the routine that had made her successful as a manager. The District Manager had very few problems with Sarah’s location and his visits were routine. In Sarah’s travels to other communities for Management Meetings within her District, she was surprised at the appearance and business practices of some of the other stores and their managers. Sarah was smart enough not to criticize openly, but she had some disdain for what appeared to her as unprofessional and poor business practices…

Individual Research Project: Part II Instructions:

Your goal for this week’s assignment is to capture information about resources – books, articles, websites and the like – that you may want to use when you sit down to write your paper.  Because your paper is about corporate responsibility you will want to identify sources, in addition to those about the organization that you have selected, about ethics or ethical standards. Record basic information about the resource (author, title, publisher, date, etc.) that will help you prepare your reference list.  Also, you want to capture notes about what the author says (content) and whether or not you think this resource is a work of quality (assessing the credibility).  You may conduct your research at any library or by using a search engine such as www.google.com  or www.hotbot.com.  From your research you are to:

1.    Identify at least six quality resources (books, periodicals, websites, etc.) that address the history, background, and overview of the company and the behavior you are examining.

2.    Prepare a one to two (1-2) paragraph annotation for each of your six sources.  Your annotation should include a description of the information provided within the resource and an evaluation of its quality and/or credibility.  The source citation must follow the guidelines established in the APA style guide.

Additional Resources:

Additional resources for conducting and producing your research project are available in the document “Individual Research Project Resources” located in your Course Materials folder.
