Discussing a topic like gossip or grapevine communication during our formal class may seem like a funny question to ask or even post on but it is a true reflection of real life and daily operational issues. For example as my wife is a secretary for a local police dept found out the her raise was approved two weeks before she was told formally by maintenance staff person who over heard during working at the town hall. She was not sure to believe what she was told or not but she did not like missing the pay period in between that time frame. (just a personal note on the grapevine)

First, I like to mention the four function of communication Information, Motivational, Control and Emotive (based on emotion) which are all simple in their defintion and really helps to look at communication as more than just speaking to a person. (More 2012, p. 294) Law Enforcement probally uses the Information and Controling functions of communication the most within the department and outside when dealing with the public.

Looking at the grapevine communicaton reminds me of an inside joke, telegraph, telephone, tella dispathcer because the know all and see all. The problem with grapevine is theat the information get skrewed and told out of context so the end result is garbled from the original words or meaning. (More 2012, p. 305) I can see the issue with facebook andother means of instant communication because information gets out so quickly and once it starts it cannot be put back into the bottle, which is another huge problem for the grapevine.

However, some postive elements are the ability to address an issue without having to be specfic like clean up the breakroom with shift is over or lose the breakroom. The text shares that it is also away of checking the pulse of a department or staff such as their emotions, attitudes and concerns. (More 2012, p. 305) This would allow the administration an oppurtunity to be proactive in addresssing the issues.

A final thought comes from our other text where a sub heading is lkisted as “Employee Voice” which is really a good point to end own. (Riccucci 2012 p.131) What is your voice known for at your job or around the water cooler, perhaps gossip, foul jokes, distasteful profanity or even the latest sports jargon/score, tv programs or who is sleeping with who.

I have often quoted, “… let your yes be yes and your no be no…” to my children to encpourage them to tell the truth because even playing a joke sometimes can get us into trouble. (Case Study Lt. Bear More 2012, p.289)(Matthew 5:37)
